After self coaching for a year I decided that I wanted to take on my first Ironman. There was so much to consider that it was tough to know where to start! That’s where Calvin came to the rescue. From our initial meeting I knew I was in good hands in the questions he asked taking into consideration not only my athletic goals but those of the non-triathlon related sort…like friends and family. With Calvin’s coaching, I didn’t have to guess if what I was doing was right. On race day, I knew I was prepared and to this day still think of my first Ironman as being the best day of my life! How could it not be when your coach and his wife and mom are standing at the top of Yellow Lake in the pouring rain with a sign and again on the turn around on the marathon!” For the scientific types who like data, Calvin has you covered as well. From lactate tests, to power meters to general gadgets galore, he’s up on all the latest technology and research as well. Whether you’re looking to start off in running, cycling or triathlon or want to advance after years of experience, I highly recommend Finish Line Coaching!

The reason I decided to hire a coach to train for Ironman was mainly due to my work schedule. Most of the training plans out there seem to cater to the Monday – Friday crowd. As a shift worker I needed a plan to cater to my days off and rotating schedule. I didn’t have the knowledge or time to try to adjust an “off the shelf” program to fit my needs. Calvin set up an excellent program and got me to start line feeling fantastic. I did better than I ever imagined at my first Ironman! I would recommend Calvin to anyone!

Calvin’s coaching offers just the right mix of fun, goals, and structure.  Calvin connected with me as a person and adjusted our workout plans and programs to fit my varying schedule and changing needs.  Working with Calvin’s programs over the past year, I have had several big personal bests.  But more importantly, I’ve had a lot of fun and really enjoyed each of my training sessions.  That’s exactly the kind of balance that I was looking for from my coach.  Thanks Calvin!

Calvin strives to remind his athletes what’s most important about their sport. I race triathlon because I enjoy it, and Calvin encourages me to have fun during training and competition. He approaches his coaching from an entirely positive perspective, and I look forward to each coaching session because it is a reprieve from the stresses of school and work. His focus on the process of training, instead of specific time goals, lets me take much more away from training sessions and races. Outside factors (weather, the course, other competitors) determine when I finish; concentrating on the process determines how I finish.
I hired Calvin at a time when I was rehabilitating a running injury. He kept me fit and confident while I recovered by training what I could do, not what I couldn’t. I went in to the 2008 season just hoping to be able to run again; I never would have expected to set new personal bests. Thanks Calvin!
Sun Run 2008 35:25 PB – 39 second
BMO Half Marathon 2008 1:19:42 PB – 4 seconds
Persona Oliver Half Ironman 4:42 PB – 16 minutes

I struggled with the idea of using a coach.  As an athletic individual and a health care practitioner I thought I could coach myself and provide myself with the tools necessary to succeed in Ironman.  After two Ironman Canada races I realized that I was not improving.  I was doing the work but not progressing.  Calvin, Finish Line Coaching, helped me work my workouts around a busy life as a Dad, a coach (to my kids team) and a self employed individual.  I was no longer working out but training less and seeing gains.  Calvin helped me complete my third IMC with less ‘ workouts’ but more effective training.  I was able to get a personal best and feel stronger.  I have recommended Calvin to several friends and would not hesitate to use his knowledge again.  Thanks again Calvin.

Calvin has an enthusiastic, enjoyable attitude to everything he does. He is very knowledgeable in all areas of cycling, running, triathlon and fitness. He is a delight to train with as you always walk away having learned new details of technique, fitness, technical information, even color coordination etc. He can motivate people to perform to their potential.

As the cycling program director for the Pacific Spirit Triathlon Club, I had the good fortune to have Calvin as one of the coaches. He maintains a light-hearted demeanour in his group while focusing on the key objectives of skill acquisition, improved fitness, and group safety. The riders in his group always seemed to enjoy their workouts more than others, and as a result, adhered to the program and achieved greater gains in their cycling skills and fitness.

I had the good fortune of being coached by Calvin on the bike and to some extent running as well. He has an amazing ability to read when to push a person, when to just have fun and when we need to be serious. He is extremely adaptable in his style to work with the person he is coaching. His approach to sport is well planned, serious when necessary with the underlying tone of everything should be fun! He is also amazingly supportive and an excellent athlete in his own right!
